Economic Benefits of the Dublin Waste to Energy Project

The Dublin Waste to Energy project is being developed as a Public Private Partnership between Dublin City Council (acting on behalf of the four Dublin Local Authorities) and Dublin Waste to Energy Ltd (a joint venture between Covanta Energy, USA and DONG Energy Generation A/S, Denmark).  Covanta Energy will undertake to build and operate the facility which will process 600,000 tonnes of waste per annum, generating enough electricity for 50,000 homes annually as well as district heating potential for a further 60,000 homes.

As a large scale development, the project will stimulate substantial economic activity for the local area, the Region and the Country.  The project will generate economic benefit throughout the supply chain for both goods and services locally and throughout the wider region.  During the 3 year construction phase, the plant will employ an average workforce of approximately 275 with the construction phase of the project requiring in excess of 2,000,000 work hours.
