Community

The Dublin Waste to Energy Plant is being developed at Pigeon House Road on the Poolbeg Peninsula adjacent to the communities of Irishtown, Ringsend and Sandymount (please click to see map). Once construction is complete, the plant will be in operation for a period of 25 years.  The developers of the plant are keen to play their role in the life of the community and are undertaking several initiatives in respect of this.

Community Gain

Since the inception of the Dublin Waste to Energy project Dublin City Council has indicated that a Community Gain Fund will be established in accordance with Government Policy to support facilities and services which would be of benefit to the community in the catchment area of the project (please click to see map). The approvals for the project granted by An Bord Pleanála and the EPA reflected the City Council intention to ensure an appropriate Community Gain Fund be put in place.  The Fund will comprise two separate payments: an initial contribution equivalent to 3% of the estimated construction costs of the facility and an ongoing payment of €1 per tonne of waste accepted at the plant in the first year of operation which thereafter will be updated in accordance with the consumer price index.

A Community Liaison Committee consisting of members of the local community and local elected representatives is to be established to administer the Fund and to act as a liaison between the Project and the local community regarding ongoing monitoring of operations of the plant.  For further information on the Community Gain Fund and the Community Liaison Committee please click here.

Local Engagement

Since the inception of the project, Dublin City Council has engaged with the local community through a local dedicated information service which was established in Ringsend in 2001 and is still in operation today.  Contact details for the local office are available in the Contact Us section of site.
