New operator confirmed for Dublin Waste to Energy plant
Dublin Waste to Energy (DWTE) has confirmed that Kanadevia Inova, the Switzerland-based green-tech leader, will take over responsibility for operating and maintaining the DWTE facility at Poolbeg.
The facility remains owned by Dublin Waste to Energy Limited, a public–private partnership involving the four Dublin local authorities and private investors.
Kanadevia Inova will now be responsible for operating and maintaining the facility, having acquired Encyclis Ireland Operations Ltd, which has operated the DWTE plant since it began commercial operations in 2017.
As part of the transition, around 60 Encyclis employees will transfer to Kanadevia Inova, as the existing Dublin‑based operations team will remain in place.
Kanadevia Inova will now manage the planned maintenance and upgrade works at the DWTE plant to enable it to operate at its licensed capacity of up to 690,000 tonnes of residual waste per year. Currently the plant processes 600,000 tonnes annually and generates sufficient electricity to power approximately 140,000 homes and will provide heat for the Dublin District Heating System
Kanadevia Inova is one of the largest and most established players globally in waste-to-energy, renewable gas and related technologies, with operations in 17 countries employing over 3,500 people. The company (under its previous name, Hitachi Zosen Inova) was the DWTE plant’s technology contractor for design, build and commissioning.
Kieran Mullins, DWTE Project Director said; “We have an excellent relationship with Kanadevia Inova since our earliest days, and we are delighted that they will now operate and maintain our facility. DWTE continues as owner of the facility and remains accountable for the asset and its long-term strategy. Our joint focus will be on safe, compliant and reliable operations, while ensuring continuity for our employees, customers, suppliers and stakeholders.”
